Anslem Esi Foundation Donates 80 Desks to Two Edo State Primary Schools
Pupils in Fugar and Uzairue, Edo State, swapped bare floors for new desks in January 2020.

In January 2020 the Anslem Esi Foundation, the privately funded initiative of Dallas-based philanthropist Anslem Oshionebo, presented 80 tables and benches to two public primary schools in Edo State, Nigeria: Usagbe Primary School in Fugar, Etsako Central Local Government Area, and Oyagha Primary School in Uzairue, Etsako West Local Government Area.
A seat for every pupil
Before the donation, many pupils sat on bare floors or crowded onto broken benches. The new desks, each a table with its bench, were built by local carpenters from local wood and engraved with the words "Donated by Anslem Oshionebo Foundation" and the date. Using local craftsmen meant the desks suited the classrooms, could be repaired locally and created work in the community.
Celebrations in Fugar and Uzairue
Presentation ceremonies held between 21 and 23 January 2020 brought together pupils in their school uniforms, teachers, parents, traditional leaders and community elders. Pupils clapped and cheered as they took their seats, and community leaders thanked the foundation for investing in the next generation.

Part of a long commitment
The foundation has supported elementary schools in Edo State with chairs, tables and learning materials since 2015. "A child who sits at a desk instead of on a floor learns differently," Anslem Oshionebo says. "They stand taller. Children are born without a choice about their circumstances, and we can choose to give them the tools to learn."
